The quality really didn't matter, as the car will be completely destroyed within seconds of the start of the race. So there was no pressure at all. Just a lot of paint and masking tape. I'll post photos this evening, and go into more detail of the project. Special thanks to Bob our host, Jack Armstrong(Armstrong and Getty) who will be driving the car, and obviously Scott.

Airbrushed guitar

Here is the design for my son's guitar. I've been pretty busy with it, and should have the color applied in the next few days, if I can find the time. The process has been a lot of fun. I've built my own paint booth in the garage- in hopes of eliminating dust. Anyway, I've done the prep work- including sanding, applying filler, sanding, priming, sanding. Did I mention sanding? I just laid the base coat, and yup. I'll be sanding that as well. It's a lot of work- but should be nice when its done. Unfortunately, this is usually what most of mine really look like. We always see the ones in mags, and shows, but what about the rest of them. You know what I'm talking about. It's that thing under the tarp next to the dusty Exercycle. That monolith that you often talk about, but ends up being covering with card board boxes and old throw rugs. This is what most of us gear heads see more often then not; a half completed "dream machine." I call it that because, for most of the car's initial years with a new owner, they look like beautiful show pieces in our minds, but look like this in the garage. Sometimes I get frustrated with a drawing, especially when it's complexity creates problems with lighting and tone. But after working through the issues, and finding resolutions that I am comfortable with, the labor definitely turns into love. I ended up spending a few more hours on this than I had originally planned, but in the end, I'm pleased with the result. I'm straying away from the previous year's focus, or lack of focus. This last year, I put most of my efforts toward client's personal vehicles, and found it to be not nearly as rewarding as I thought. People, for the most part, love artwork, and really want it. Especially when it's personalized with their own subject matter. Unfortunately for the artist, that is where the love affair ends. For some reason, most people don't think artwork is worth the time it takes to produce. If a plumber charges $60.00 an hour, and works on your house for three hours, you'll whip out your checkbook for $120.00, and think nothing of it. But if an artist wants half of that to do the same amount of work, he is perceived to be overcharging. Ironically enough, you can teach just about anybody how to be a plumber. Go figure. Anyway, I'll no longer pursue commissioned work. When people approach me about it, it usually goes a little better. Only about 75% of them are shocked that artist actually charge for their services. Selling prints, and finished artwork is much more lucrative anyway. Anybody else have similar issues?

BANNED BY FORD MOTOR COMPANY

I recently received a curious email from the printing outfit that does my on-line store printing. The message informed me of how some of my images are infringing on the intellectual rights of Ford Motor Company. This bewildered me, mainly because most of my work is for individuals, and their own cars, as apposed to pleasing to the masses by doing generic logo type shirt designs. So I check out my store, and sure enough- all of the "Ford" vehicles were flagged, and subsequently frozen from further sales. I contacted my hosting/ printing company, and they informed me that Ford , along with other vehicle makers had made infringement statements to all designs, they felt, were guilty. I basically drew people's hot rods. Because they were "Ford" hot hods- Ford feels as though they have proprietary rights over those images. Does anyone have any info on this? The attorney has yet to return my calls, and my designs are still being held hostage.

Johnnymacillustration.com IS UP AND RUNNING!!

The new site is up! The shop is called Hot Dots, and the owner, Ed, commissioned this for a little project he is putting together, and when all the bugs get worked out, I'll see if I can write a little more about it. But for now, I'll just have to keep the particulars to myself. As for Ed, he has been doing this for a while, and it shows. His office is slammed with all kinds of hot rod art and memorabilia. His walls and shelves are literally covered with old car mags, die cast models, rat fink statutes, and everything else in between. For a car nut like me, It's fun just to look around the office. But the one thing that really catches my eye, is his example pile in the far northern corner of the room. This is a drafting table where he keeps his print examples. Different type of screen designs, and direct print samples pretty much cover the once used art table. Looking though these shirts and swatches, is sort of like reading a resume. The work he does is top shelf, and the artists he employ are really a cut above the average "hot rod-freak with a crayon", like me. R.J. is one hell of a nice guy, and truly loves the work he does. The bike is full of details like antique coins, hand made serpent-like pegs, and even a real civil war belt buckle. The bars are one-off ape hangers, hand made by R.J. himself, and are from his signature handlebar line called, Silver Back- King of the apes. His work is definitely unique, and targeted toward a specific market. If you want new-shinny-chrome plated bolt-ons, then these are not for you. These are for the old-school, suicide shifting- triple clutching- bug in the teeth kind of bikers. These bars are works of art. But not the artsy-fartsy- Martha Stuart-style trendy HD crap that's selling in strip malls. This stuff is raw steel at it's best. No Plating; no painting; just attitude. You really got to see this stuff up close and in person. R.J. loves detail, and you can easily spend an hour or so examining this bike, and still not manage to catch all there is to see. If you want to know where he is coming from, just look at his licence plate. That is not fake- it's really his plate, and he drives it like that everyday.

46 Ford

Here is a shirt design for a guy here in Sac. The car has a chevy LS1 motor, and he was installing a new leather interior while I have been doing the artwork. The designs were completed in AI, while the cars themselves were hand illustrated, inked with prisma color ink, and then airbrushed for smooth transitions. The guys name is Tom (obviously), and he was very pleased with the work. He was tired of wearing someone elses car on his shirts, while driving his ford to the shows. So as soon as the work was uploaded, he bought a few shirts, and they are on their way to his house as I type. I can't wait to see his cool new shirts this weekend at the local drive in. He he. I get a kick out of seeing my shirts in public. The web site is under way (www.johnnymacillustration.com) and I am currently working on two illy's for Iron Slave Choppers-a kustom bike shop here in town. The work is inked, and ready for color. I'll be done with them tomorrow, but I'll have to have them scanned to disc at a print shop, as the work is too large for my scanner. I have been working with Scott over at Laughing monkey designs, and he is currently putting together a site for me and my new company(Johnnymac Technical Illustration, or JTI ) The site should be up within the next week or so, and it will encompass much of the work you have seen here, not to mention all of the stuff I have been so very busy producing for various clients here in Northern Cal. The new work includes a few conceptual illustrations for car builders, and some two wheeled paintings as well. My mediums have expanded to include airbrushing for realism, and technical illustrations that highlight your hand-crafted creations. I am excited to read the feedback. This 36 Dodge belongs to an actual Professor of Art at the local junior college. I was pretty nervous presenting it to her, yes, she's a she. and SHE did all of her own sheet metal work, and welding on this little beauty. It's flat black with red steelies, and white walls. The truck has been dropped, and has had a sbc dropped into it as well. This thing is quite the old skool looker. The body isn't perfect, but it all fits well, and is a solid driver. The owner actually won "Best daily driver" at the Capitol City Cruisers car show last weekend. That's where I saw the truck, and luckily enough for me, was hired by it's kind owner, to illustrate it's portrait. This truck really says rat, with a capital "R". The original "teardrop aluminum trailer is hers as well, and accompanied the truck at the car show. The red pin stripes, and chrome bullet style axle caps give off the feel of an old rod from the fifty's, but they didn't have A/C in rods back then. Yup! She even installed air conditioning in it- ( but don't worry- I won't tell any Kustom Kulture purists about it if you don't) All in all, Great truck, great lady, now if only her husband will let her take me for a ride?

Home-Made Yama-Harley

Here is a bike that I just completed. I drew it on my lunch break at work. It is drawn in regular old ink, on copier paper. Simple enough, but I think it came out pretty well. It's not exactly correct- because I didn't have any particular bike in mind, and I was without a reference photo. So it's just from my head. Look close enough, and you'll see what I mean. It's kind of a mutt, as bikes are concerned. But it was fun to make the stuff up. I've got the shirts ordered for the show next week, and I'm still without cards. The Capital City Cruisers will be hosting the show in Ranch Cordova, near Vintage Ford, on April 15Th. Rex Roden, with the club, has been a great source for info to me, as I anxiously attempt to get ready for the show. I'll be selling a few shirts, mugs, prints etc. Not a whole lot of stuff, just enough to get a feel for how my designs are received. I might do a little airbrushing, but I want to use this opportunity to learn as much as I can. So I might just hold back on doing too much for right now. The shirts I'm doing are similar to the ones at the store, but a little different. This is because I'm going to a local printer for the bulk order. Plus, the shirts will be screened, as opposed to laser printed. For this, Ive had to really start learning the Adobe side of the craft. There really is a lot to learn within this industry. I thought I could just paint, and be happy. But Noo! I actually have to learn something. It's really fun though. This is helping to raise my skill level, and open my eyes to the business side of the art. Good stuff- I'll post more info on this as time goes by.

Business Cards

I need business cards, and I need them fast. I was going to get all fancy, and have the best of the best. But since that did nothing but make the process harder, I've decided to go basic. It was a nice idea, trying to incorporate a map of his Mom's house within the design. But I did not do a good job of layout. The colors were waaaay to busy, as was the layout. I couldn't wait to get home tonight and straighten this one out. Hey Man, Less IS more! My scanner is too small, so I'll have to take it to a print shop to get scanned in fully. But until then, I thought I'd post what I had. He has fond memories, and close ties, to his childhood neighborhood, and the house his father built during the great depression. Hence, the small street map to the right of his portrait. Cucci knew I was drawing his car, but has no idea I was including a portrait of him with it- not to mention the reference to his parent's house. His mother still lives there-she is 102 years old! Now you can understand the heart. I can't wait to give this to him. He is gonna come unglued!!

Traditional Rod & Kulture Illustrated Issue #9

The new R&K is out! Iv'e been waiting for this for a while, and man, was it worth the wait. The art diirector over there, Zombie, gave me three pages, and a nice little article summing up our interactions, along with some cliff-notes from a bio I had put together for the piece. Zombie's a good guy to deal with, and he's a damn good artist himself. If you haven't had a chance to read R&K yet- give it a shot. It's a good mag, and like it's subject matter, it gets better with age.

Purple Rain

I realize it's been a while, but I've been real busy with my boy's basketball teams. This car is for a friend of mine from work. His name is Dave, and this car belongs to his daughter's boyfriend. The car of choice for this project is... Can you figure it out? It's hard to tell with the flames, and the left front fender coming off, but if you look at the front end, you should be able to identify the exploding mystery machine.

Prosper Magazine

Here is how the article will look in the magazine. This 57 Ford was drawn for a guy I met at another blog site. I wanted to do this, because I hadn't done one of these before, and it gave me a chance to work with color. I think I've been avoiding color, because I was getting so comfortable with grays. Well, sometimes you gotta get out of the comfort zone if you wish to progress as an artist. I'm not totally happy with it-but what artist is ever satisfied with his own art. I think it could use smoother transitions between highlights, and some of the line work could use a little help. Hey, it was a quickie, and an experiment with color. I will be doing a lot more with color from now on. However, don't be surprised to see some of the ole black and white as well. I really like the effect of grey tones.

This one, like some of the others is easily purchased on various items in my online store. Like this gentleman, I could draw your car, and Boom! You have everything from t-shirts, to mouse pads, to posters, at your fingertips. You could buy one item, or fifty; it really doesn't matter. Either way, you save money. This is really cool for car clubs. Each member could have their own car on their own shirts, and at the same time have the club logo on all of the shirts within the club. Usually, everybody in the club agrees to a generic shirt, and they add the club logo to it. Where is the individualism in that? Club members are members because it's fun to hang out with different people with different cars. Even if it's a car specific club, like "camaros or model A's" each member wants their own car to be their own. If one guy paints his car the same color as another guy in the club, or ads the same wheels, someone might get a little irritated; heck, some guys would get downright mad. Each member wants to be different within the club. Right? So why buy the same old shirt as everybody else in the club? Have the same "club" logo, but have your own car. Makes sense to me.

Johnnymac

Old School Gasser

This little creation was a lot of fun to draw. I am getting a few pages of print space in Rod & Kulture Illustrated in the spring, and when I sent them a file of the baby carriage, I asked the art director if there was anything he would like me to do. He suggested a gasser. This, my friends is the result. Notice the plug for R&K on the door? The research for this car was very enlightening. Even though I have loved cars all my life, I really didn't know that much about race cars from the early years. Needless to say, there is a ton of info out there is someone is so inclined. The car itself doesn't actually exist; it's components from different cars I found in books, the internet, and of course, my imagination. The concept was from a top view of a 50 Anglia with the front clip removed. That one had an independent front end, so this is made up because I wanted the feel of old school, and nothing says this more than a straight axle. The big block Chevy is from another car, don't remember the type, but it was traditionally carbed- I gave it a home-made type injection system, and the wheels are those cool wagon wheels from the fifties. I've always loved these wheels, so I finally found a place to put them. Nothing reeks of gasser better than a Willies, so of course, I had to do that, but I wouldn't be me if I didn't show way too much detail, so I went ahead and left the front sheetmetal off. Let me know what you think folks, Like it-hate it, either way I'd love to hear your thoughts. I still have the vette in work for ms-p, but if there are any other requests- don't be shy.

Tattoos

I have been getting requests as of late, to do tattoos. At first, I couldn't see why someone would ask this, mainly because I myself don't have any. This is not for any other reason, than I can't think of anything I would want on me for ever. Ironically enough, I have always enjoyed looking at other people's tats. Some of the artwork is truly amazing. But just recently, a friend of mine, who has numerous tattoos, pointed out the reason for the inquiries. The ballpoint pen drawings I do, like this one, look like tattoos. He said it was the same type of work; single-line illustration. Just like artwork done on the skin, the shading is actually small lines, stacked together in a way that gives the illusion of a constant graduation of color. I had never thought of it that way. Now that I look at it, I think he might have a point.( no pun intended)

This one, like the previous, was done with ballpoint pen. Try to zoom in, if you can, and check out the details. Bolts, valves, rocker arms; they are all in there. This is what is truly fun. Sure, it's very "Roth-like" with smoking tires, and a crazed, gearshifting pilot, and it's true, Mr. Roth influenced many generations, so we shouldn't become plagiarist, but I have incorporated a little of my own style into it. It really is fun to draw "rat-fink" style art. There is something unencumbered about it. It's relaxing, and without rules; just big tires, smoke, and a gearshift. Everything else is up to the artist. It's like Big Daddy gave us a "template" on how to effectively draw hotrods. No, it's like he gave us a template on how to illustrate the attitude of hotrodding. This is what made him so influential in the hotrod art world.
Back in the fifties, there was a feeling going around; an attitude; a kind of "underground kulture" was forming that encompassed cars, kids, and the need for freedom. Freedom from their parents, freedom from the restraints of an "obey the rules or else" society, and freedom from, of course, the speed limit. Artists tried, but nobody really ever found a way of tapping into this new way of thinking, until the gods of petrol gave the world Ed Roth. His art didn't just tell the world what these greased-up throttle jockeys were feeling, his art drove it down society's throat. With smoking tires, screaming engines, and a crazy, bug-eyed rodent named Ratfink, this new artistic style hit the hot rod scene in a way that no other artist will ever be able to duplicate.
This is not because he was the best illustrator, or the best painter. In fact, his work wasn't as technical, or as precise as some of his peers like George Trosley, who is a great artists, still pumping them out today. But he's not Big Daddy. So What made an above average artist so great? Well first, we, as artists, need to realize what art truly is. Art is nothing more, and hopefully nothing less, than a tangible display of something that is experienced in a non tangible way. "Whaaaaa?" Art is the expression of emotion. That's it. You see, artist aren't just paintbrush technicians, or pencil actuators. They are communicators. Their job is to communicate their emotions through their art. This is where most of us drop the ball. We focus so intently on being technically correct; "The windshield should look just like this", or "The guys hand is way too large", or "shiny paint needs to reflect just so", that we forget all about the emotions we should be trying to convey. This however, was not Mr. Roth's problem. His art was simple, but effective. Most of his stuff, was nothing more than a rat driving a car, but it was portrayed in such a way, that you ( the viewer) could feel the roar of the engine, you could smell the smoke bellowing off the rear tires, and if you looked at it long enough, you just had to get into your Dad's 58 Pontiac, and burn rubber all the way to A&W. Ed Roth's art encapsulated the attitude, and emotion of a generation. That is why his work was so great. I did speak with a happy client today, who received his illustration. All went very well, and he was happy with his new artwork. That really felt good. It was a gorgeous 55 corvette. I only wish I could have gotten a scan of it. I was unable to finished a scanner big enough for it. This is why I started this blog in the first place. Talk about hot rods, and the art that represents them. This is a quick 10 min sketch for today's blog. I will try to do one of these a day, err, or when I post. I love to do this stuff, quick sketches. Sometimes it's hard to do this when I'm working on a commission job, or an important item that I want to be just right. I'll get so caught up in the final product, that I will lose that " relaxed feeling". Anybody know what I'm talking about? When I draw quickly; the lines flow in a manner that truly represent my own style. Good or bad, what ever people may think, it's me; my stuff, and that is when it's fun. But as soon as I start drawing what the client wants-I'm screwed! This causes my proportions to go all over the place, and I get stuck trying to make something that does not represent me, fit within the scope of my particular style. Anyway, that's why I'm gonna try to sketch as much as I can for my blog. It's kind of a "back to the basics" sort of exercise. Make sense?
Well, I linked up my on-line store with this blog. The first time I've ever done anything like that, wasn't too hard. Well, if you consider four hours of trial and error, followed by two more hours of saying things like " What the f-*#K!", easy. Then hay, It was a piece of cake.

OK, so I'm finally back on this thing. I've been real busy getting work done for clients. One new client is an engineer from out of town who works as an inventor. He hired me to do his patent illustrations for him. It's pretty cool stuff. Most of the time, I'm doing exploded views of the components that make up the mechanisms of his inventions. The work is pretty easy, but I'm going to have to learn how to do it on the computer. Right now, I'll draw everything by hand, then scan it in and e-mail him the finished product. Doing it electronically would make revisions, and storage a lot easier; not to mention the repeatability factor. So I've got adobe illustrator, and I'm stumbling through it, eventually it will click, and my analog brain will become digitized. I tried to digitize my brain last weekend, but wound up with a hangover. Regarding artwork; my goal is to have something up here by the end of the weekend. Time to go,I would say goodbye, but I'm only talking to myself. Nobody cares:(

So I'll get artwork on here as soon as I can.
